How to Fix Golf Slice and Stay Straight

How to Fix Golf Slice and Stay Straight

Article by John Holdsworth

An especially frustrating swing fault, particularly for beginners and those on a higher handicap, is slicing the ball. The ball will in the beginning fly left of the target line then will veer drastically right. The following hints and tips will explain how to fix golf slice and therefore stay straight and add more distance.

The slice is a weak shot deficient in power and will often fly higher than it should. The reason it curves to the right is because the ball has been struck with an open face therefore aiming off to the left.

Incorrect grip and hand action is normally the cause of this shot which means that the club face returns to the ball in an open position, aiming to the right of the ball to target line. Your ball finishes up right of your target as a consequence of this. A lot of golfers try to rectify this fault by aiming further left to compensate for it.

This will probably just make the problem worse as the more you allow for your slice the more likely you are to perpetuate it. You create a vicious circle because by aiming well left your swing path is likely to go the same way and you must deliver the club face in an open position, or the ball will fly straight left.

To fix golf slice we need to look closely at the grip. When you set up, your left hand should hold the grip in the fingers, not too tight. The V’s between thumb and first finger of both hands should point toward the right shoulder not your chin. When you have taken your grip, look down at your left hand and make sure that you can see at least two knuckles. This is another way to check that your grip is correct.

Ensure that your feet and shoulders are parallel to the target line, and your left shoulder should be higher than the right one. Also don’t position the ball too far forward in your stance as this will also lead to an open face.

Now let’s look at the swing. Check that you are not rolling your hands which will open the club face on the takeaway. At the top of the backswing the club face should be on the same angle as the shoulder plane. With your weight on the right leg make a full shoulder turn.

On the downswing, swing the club down from the top with your hands and arms from the inside, moving your arms in unison close to the right hip. On the through swing move your arms away from the left hip to clear the left side. The back of the left hand and forearm should rotate within the arc of the swing and the club shaft must point downwards on the follow through as your weight shifts onto your firm left leg.

Follow these hints and tips and in no time you will discover how to fix golf slice and be hitting straight down the middle of the fairway and with more distance.
