Generate More Power With A Wide Golf Swing Arc

Article by The Golf Swing Genius

Having a wide golf swing arc is important for getting more power out of your swing. Golf swing extension will promote a wider arc and there are a few helpful tips that can help you achieve this.

First of all, a wide swing arc will start with a proper golf swing takeaway. Make sure the club stays as low to the ground as possible while you are starting your backswing. It is a common golf swing error to pick the club up too quickly at the start of the backswing which will make it almost impossible to get a good arc in your swing. You want to stay in your angles from your setup position as you take the golf club back. The arms should be fully extended all the way to the halfway back point in the backswing. At this point the right arms will naturally bend as you take the rest of your backswing and swing the golf club over your right shoulder.

In the downswing your right arm will now need to straighten as your club lowers. It’s important to maintain your wrist set or hinge on the downswing but also allow the right arm to straighten. From the point halfway down in the backswing, both arms should be fully extended with no elbow bend. Keep the wrists bent as long as possible as this creates lag in the golf swing. Once you’ve hit through the golf ball at impact, your arms should stay fully extended until the club gets halfway up on the follow through which is where your left arm will now bend as you complete the golf swing by swinging the club over your left shoulder.

Another point about keeping your arms straight is that they should be extended but not locked or too stiff and rigid. This will cause more problems and make hitting good golf shots difficult. At the setup position, the arms should always be extended but not locked. This will ensure you can make a wide golf swing arc while keeping the fluidity necessary for a proper swinging motion.

Now, in order to achieve a wide swing arc, golfers will sometimes make the mistake of swaying or moving laterally in the golf swing. This is a common error that can cause more problems. You might make a wider arc, but you’ll lose your center and it will be difficult to move the same distance back to hit the golf ball solidly. There should be a turn and a weight shift in the backswing, but only so the weight goes to the inside part of the right foot. If your weight moves too far to the outside of the back foot, there is too much lateral movement in the swing. As long as the weight shift is correct and there good extension with the arms in the swing, you’ll gain a lot of extra power and more distance out on the golf course.
