It is bad enough needing a Golf Swing Lesson, but if you cannot hit the golf ball properly, then it must be a golf swing problem. That is the technical term for it. However, you can look really stupid if you do not know how to swing? Your Golf club properly?

It can be hard to figure out what needs to be fixed. The way most Golf experts would tell it, you need to be an astrophysicist to explain a Golf Swing Lesson. It helps to be a technical journalist to write it up? It can be difficult for a newbie to see what is wrong with their swing. So first golf lessons, just check to see you have two shoulders first?

That is usually a good pointer to what the problem could be, especially if you only have one. Next tip; if you have two shoulders then you only have half a problem. More often than not; most people dip the back shoulder on the back swing.

They must be really weird; because I cannot for the life of me, dip my back shoulder on the back swing while I am lifting my club up high above and behind my head? Ah well; some people can do the impossible and wreck their golf swing. That is the main cause of a bad swing, believe me; it can cause more problems than the wife.

Actually the back shoulder dip and the wife have a lot in common? They can both cause your timing to be thrown way off. Both can really mess your game up badly. Back shoulder dip leads to weight shift onto the wrong foot when you swing. Your follow through is poor; actually it sucks. You will also get hand distortion on impact.

No I am not on acid? Hand distortion just means your hands are all over the place. They are not staying straight and lined up with the ball properly. Your club face will not be straight on impact.

You will not hit the ball flush. You might top the ball, slice it, or only partly make contact with it. In any case; your shot will end up all to hell. Hey, you need to fix your golf swing? Oh right? Slo mo is a beautiful thing and the good news is the Videos are free. You got choices of Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods or whatever flavor you like? Before long you will hit that ball and make solid contact consistently. That is when it becomes a natural part of your game. You will become a master swinger. Maybe even a perfect swinger.

Are you having fun? I am. Another problem is fast swinging. Swing speed is important but you realistically cannot be fast 100% of the time with every shot. If you hit the ball correctly it will ping away beautifully. There is no perfect swing speed or magic formula. Every golfer differs because of your own particular physicality, height, weight, muscle mass age, stance, etc…

Some pros have been clocked at 160 Mph in their swing speeds. You are not out there to beat speed records. Be prepared to lose a little swing speed for a lot more accuracy and consistency every time. Worrying unduly and agonizing about club speed and too many other things can ruin your game. Relax and you will play more naturally without any added stress.

Do not look to find what you are doing wrong. That is a lost cause and counter productive. Get back to commonsense and basics. Concentrate instead; on a golf lesson that teaches you how to get it right. Get that picture in your mind of Tiger or Ben Hogan in that slow motion golf swing video. Visualize yourself reproducing the same golf mechanics naturally.

In order to strike the golf ball cleanly, (at the bottom of your down swing and on the center of the club face), all the movable parts in your golf swing must be in sync.Tempo and Timing are key.

When you move around in your backswing, no matter how in sync your golf swing may be, the chances of you returning the club head solidly to the back of the ball, are very slim.

In this article I wish to focus on the primary “movable malady”, that culprit that is embedded in many golfer’s swings. SWAYING, (It is generally considered to be an excess of lateral (side to side), body motion in a golf swing, away from the golf ball).

You’ve heard the term swaying most closely associated with the takeaway. From the static position at address, in order to gain the golf swing’s momentum and help the process begin, the average golfer starts the backswing by moving off the ball laterally to the right. (for a right handed player). And I do mean noticeably off the ball.

This immediately takes their swing out, and then around their body and way off of the proper golf swing plane, and the majority of the time, it results in the golfer yanking the club too far inside on the back swing, where the club will eventually get ” stuck” behind her/him. Feeling that they’re out of position they will then conjure up all sorts of ways to attempt to get back into the hitting zone.

On the downswing the sway, through an unwanted metamorphosis, changes into a sliding motion. To compensate their sway, the golfer must slide laterally, to the left, and fight their golf swing in order to get in a position to strike the golf ball.. You’ve heard the fantastic term: ” Let the club swing you”….We’ll with the sway and slide the very opposite is usually true.

The best advice I can give the average and beginner golfer regarding stopping the sway in their golf swing, (and then be able to strike the golf ball more solidly), is to keep the lower half of your body quiet throughout the process. This does not mean be completely rigid and stiff, so as to inhibit movement..but close to that..

You’ve seen demonstrations by accomplished golfers, where they kneel down on the ground, (creating a stable, stationery foundation, taking their legs and feet totally out of the equation), and yet they are still able to hit a teed up golf ball impressively long and straight.This underscores that the upper parts of the golf swing are the most important, when it comes to introducing the club head to the ball solidly at impact.The lower body parts are valued additives that should not be overlooked, but that should not be focused on until the upper body movable parts are synchronized and are ingrained in your golf swing.

Professional golfers and skilled amateurs sync all the movable parts together. They know how to properly incorporate the ” engine of the golf swing”, the lower body, into the orchestration.It’s all about timing….

They have spent hundreds upon thousands of hours practicing and honing in on their tempo and coordination of all body parts. You have not, and most likely will not have the time nor desire to put in such effort. After all it is their job, but not yours.

Therefore, since the lower body, ( hips, legs and feet), are so difficult for the weekend golfer to synchronize, I feel it is of utmost importance, and imperative, that you at first focus your entire practicing efforts on learning to strike the ball consistently with your upper body parts, the parts most closely attached to the golf club, ( hands, arms, shoulders and chest). Until you can gain the skills required to strike the ball solidly, time after time, through hand-eye coordination, do not bring the other half, ( the lower half), of your body into play. But please, be sure to make a full shoulder turn. Don’t simply swing your arms back and forth without the upper body going along with them. For this would render your practice worthless.

Here are some useful bullet points that will hopefully help you rectify the situation:

-At address have your weight slightly favoring your left side.This makes it much harder to sway off the ball at the beginning of the takeaway.

-Brace your right foot and have your right knee pointing slightly inward, in the direction toward the golf ball. ( A good drill is to place a golf ball under the outside middle of your right foot. This gives you that “locked in” lower body feeling when you start the back swing).

-Keep your head over the ball and try to have it remain in this position, ( it will move slightly).Think of your head being attached to the top of neck and spine, and turn “up and around” them, not swaying laterally with them.

-Find a trigger mechanism that helps you get the golf swing started from a static position to a fluid movement back and then eventually through on the down swing. Hogan waggled; many forward press their hands to get started. Don’t overlook this important aspect. Do whatever works for you.

-Take the club back at the start in a “one piece” motion. i.e. the hands, arms, upper body in sync. (A good tip is to have the back of your left hand facing the target for the first several inches of your take away).

Stopping swaying in your golf swing will produce solid ball striking results the will help you improve your game.

There are a lot of techniques and principles employed by professional golfers and trainers to enhance their golf swing and ultimately their game. There has been hundreds of people claiming to define the correct form, stance and hit in order to make that perfect golf swing consistently achievable to land you closest to the hole. One such principle was made popular by Ben Hogan and has been coined the “Ben Hogan’s pane of glass” or simply put, the golf swing plane.The way Ben Hogan demonstrated the golf swing plane in his book was through a diagram which likely can be found on-line. The diagram depicts a pane of glass arising from the ball on the ground, angled along the golf club at an angle through which the golfer’s head protrudes from, giving the image of a pane of glass resting on the shoulders of the golf player. This pane of glass is extended through to the golfer’s target line and when the golf head is made to swing along this pane, you improve your chances of making good contact.Although imagining this swing plane may seem easy and simple to execute, it is rather quite hard to achieve. Even the best pro golfers around have difficulty keeping their golf heads at an ideal golf swing plane. If you feel as though you have already achieved proper form and stance yet there is still something wrong with your swing, you can try documenting your swings and studying it, and determining whether you remain at a constant golf swing plane or not. See if you can swing your club at the same plane as it returns. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t. Simply make modifications to your swing. Remember you do not have to be on the exact golf swing plane, as long as you achieve a flatter or more parallel swing, you are on the right path to becoming an even better golf player.

People who have the privilege of watching the pros at work may have an idea of what a perfect golf swing should look and feel like. The reason why some people sought after having that perfect swing is that the game they play has becoming more and more popular around the world. In addition, that game is called golf. Golf has been around for quite some time and it started out as a quiet little game that only a few people with much time on their hands.

It became one of the most popular mainstream sports in the 1980′s people back then was debating on the perfect golf swing. Up to the rise to the top of Nick Faldo, he was the man described as having a mechanical like swing. In the 1990′s people said that Faldo had the perfect swing. Before people started declaring Faldo as the undisputed king of the swing, people also mentioned Ben Hogan or Jack Nicklaus had the perfect from when hitting the ball.

Up to the present day, people who are avid fans of the sport still argue about the best swing and perfect swing in golf. Nowadays, the name Tiger Woods figure in debates all across the country. They say that because of the success Woods is enjoying in the sport, he must be swinging consistently every time. Arguably, Woods does have a regimen that helps him in his golf swing but it may be too cocky to say that Tiger Woods have developed the perfect swing.

The drive to achieve the perfect golf swing has broken and destroyed the golf games of amateurs and professionals alike. Some of them have become obsessed with the perfection of their swings that they have totally forgotten the other aspects and skill sets of the game. Some people have spent almost all of their free time watching videos, reading instructional guides and basically listening to any body that can give them tips on improving and perfecting their swings. In the 90′s, because of the mainstream success of golf and the different golfers that were in the circuit, a lot of guides, instructional materials and special classes that strictly cater to golf and the perfection of the swing.

For years some golfers couldn’t even break an egg because of the different tips and hints they have read, tried and incorporated to their game( most of the time the different tips and guides from the different materials that they have were contrasting in principle and execution. This resulted to inconsistent performance of players that eventually led to the decline of the sport) which caused frustration in many players. Because of the obsession of some of the golfers to perfect their golf swings most of them performed poorly in ranking games and tournaments. This caused a significant decline in the golfing public in the late 90′s.

Then one machine and the vision of a man changed everything and turned the world of golf around. A company that makes golf clubs to test their shafts’ strength invented a machine; it was specifically designed to recreate the swing of Byron Nelson. Nelson is said to have the best swing in the world of golf. The machine was aptly named Iron Byron, after Nelson, and it went on to test more than a thousand shafts.

Some people noticed the accuracy and the consistency of the Iron Byron and thought that if they could dissect the movement of the Iron Byron’s perfect swing then they naturally have copied the perfect golf swing of Byron Nelson.

Getting a Grip on your golf swing

In order to obtain a good golf swing one must first understand their grip. The amazing Ben Hogan said it best “A player with a bad golf grip doesn’t want a good swing.” When an icon in the sport has such a profound statement, we really need to listen to him.

My philosophy, like most other casual golfer is “grip-it and rip-it!” This statement can be misleading. I believe the main reason behind the statement was to try and speed up play. However, some casual golfers interpret this statement a different way. Grip the club as tight as you can and swing for the fences. I’ve learned from experience that this will lead to a poor swing, and in some cases a lost ball. The main reason is that the club is being gripped too tight. Gripping the club too tight will lead to a number of problems with your swing usually resulting in thin, weak shots that slice. You must find proper balance between how tight the club is grip as well as the grip that you choose to use.

Yes, there is more than one golf grip that is used today. I’ve learned that there are actually three main types of grips that are used. Because the grip is so vital to the success of your swing, you need to understand each grip and figure out what works, and feels the best for you.

The first grip that we’ll discuss is called The Vardon Grip, or sometimes called the Overlapping Grip. This is the most common grip among the great players. The grip is named after Harry Vardon who popularized this grip around the turn of the 20th century. To correctly grip you club with the Vardon grip, you need to take the little finger on the trailing hand and place it between the index and middle finger on the lead hand (for right handed golfers, the lead hand is the left). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the training hand.

The next most common grip is called the interlocking grip. To achieve this grip you must interlock your lead hand’s index finger with your trailing hand’s pinkie. This type of grip ensures that there are no unnecessary movements during your swing. By using this grip and choking up on the club, you can give yourself better control.

Last but not least is the Ten Finger Grip. This commonly referred to as the baseball or hammer grip. This is considered to be the easiest way to hold a golf club. It is also the least preferred among golf instructors. It does have some advantages. For example this grip allows people who experience joint pain, or have arthritis, to grip the club with much less difficulty. Just grip the club as if you were gripping a baseball bat. Have the index finger on your lead hand and the pinkie finger on your trailing hand placed so they are flush together but not interlocking.

Now that you know that there are different grips to choose from, you’ll need to find out for yourself which one works best for you. Give them all a try. Once you find one that works best you need to address how firmly you grip the club.

Sam Snead once said, “Hold the club as if you had a little baby bird in your hand.” Another was to understand this is to think of your club as a tube of toothpaste. Grip it too tight and you’ll squeeze out all of the toothpaste. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is light and 10 is tight, you’ll want to stay around a 4 or 5. This will allow the club to be swung with power and control. This light pressure also increases the amount of club face rotation, thus improving your chance of squaring the club at impact. These are all good things.

Always remember that your hands must work together as a single unit when striking a ball. I know this is easier said than done. But, at address, you want to remain very relaxed and tension free, especially in your hands and forearms.

Golf is one of those activities where the participants are often trying to find the best way to achieve their goal. It is similar to trading in the stock market, where individual traders with little experience are constantly trying to find the Holy Grail to riches. Golfers are often trying to find the Holy Grail golf tip or golf swing that will help them lower their scores significantly.

An observation of the golf swings of some of the game’s most successful players over the years suggests that there is no one way to play the game best. Probably the three greatest players of all time are Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods. However, none of their swings looks very much alike. Consider the swings of other top players over time. Bruce Lietzke had a successful career on the PGA Tour, with 13 victories, yet he practiced very little. He has a classic over the top slice move, and that is the shot he favored. On the other hand Kenny Perry has the opposite swing from Lietzke and favors a draw shot. He has won 14 times on the PGA Tour.

There have been many other players over time with what would be regarded as unconventional swings. The 2010 PGA Player of the Year Jim Furyk is probably the most visible example. He has a very unorthodox swing, but is also one of the most consistent players of the last 15 years. Lee Trevino is another such player who was very consistent in his days on tour, but clearly had an unorthodox swing. On the other hand, Adam Scott has one of the nicest looking swings on tour, yet displays very little consistency.

So what makes a good golf swing? What most amateur golfers should strive to achieve is a swing they can repeat consistently. They should strive for a swing that they can repeat consistently, and one that results in consistently solid ball striking and consistent ball flight. This means it really doesn’t matter whether the player consistently slices the ball or hooks the ball. If the golfer has a good idea that will be the case, and they have a good idea how much the ball will curve in that direction, then they have achieved a consistent golf swing.

The first and most important key to a good golf swing is balance. Most golfers who struggle do not have good balance during the swing. Poor balance leads to inconsistent ball striking. Poor balance can mean too much of a sway back and forth from side to side during the swing, or from heel to toe, or toe to heel. No matter what the balance issue, the golfer will struggle.

The second key to a good golf swing is a consistent spine angle from set up to just past impact. A changing spine angle will lead to very inconsistent ball striking. One example of a changing spine angle is one where the golfer’s body rises during the back swing. When this occurs, the player must then find a way to drop back down in the swing, or otherwise they will miss the ball entirely. What often happens is that the club attacks the ball from an angle that is too steep, and this can result in a variety of ball flight issues.

The third key to a solid golf swing is a weight transfer that moves forward in the downswing through impact. The conventional swing requires a modest weight shift to the rear foot during the back swing, and then back to the front foot in the down swing and follow through. Some newer swing models, such as the Stack and Tilt swing do not require as much transfer of weight to the back foot. Instead, more weight is kept on the front foot, but in the downswing, this weight still goes forward with a hip thrust. Many golfers often finish their swing with their weight on their back foot, and this results in poor ball striking.

The fourth key to a good golf swing is proper connection between the upper and lower body and proper sequencing. There must be consistent connection between the upper and lower body throughout the golf swing. If there is any disconnect, such as the arms moving without any move in the lower body, or keeping the head down too long in the follow through, there will be inconsistent ball striking. Furthermore, the body must move in the proper sequence in order to achieve good ball striking. For instance, if the upper body starts the down swing once the back swing is completed, there will be a loss of power. A release of the hands too early in the down swing will also result in a lack of power and consistency.

The fifth key to a good golf swing is tempo and rhythm. Each golfer must find the right tempo and rhythm for their own swing. Some golfers do well with a fast tempo, while others do well with a slow tempo. However, this tempo MUST be faster in the down swing than in the back swing. Too often, in an attempt to hit the ball hard, a golfer will start their swing too quickly, and the end result is a deceleration in the down swing into impact. Furthermore, there must be good rhythm in the swing. There should be no choppiness in rhythm during the swing…it must be one continuous motion with no herky jerky type action in the swing.

What is noticeably absent from this list is the normal list of fundamentals such as the grip, stance and posture, alignment, takeaway, weight shift, swing plane, etc. While it may be ideal to work toward certain goals with these particular fundamentals, it is certainly not required that all be perfected in order to achieve a consistently performing golf swing.

Golf legend Ben Hogan was born in Stephenville, Texas. He was the youngest child of Chester and Clara Hogan. His father was a blacksmith and the family lived ten miles southwest in Dublin until 1921 when they moved 70 miles to Fort Worth.

Ben Hogan’s father died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest at the family home In 1922. The family incurred financial difficulty. The children took jobs to help their seamstress mother make ends meet. Ben’s older brother Royal quit school at age fourteen to deliver office supplies by bicycle. Nine year-old Ben sold newspapers after school at the nearby train station.

A tip from a friend led him to caddying at the age of eleven at Glen Garden Country Club. One of his fellow caddies at Glen Garden was Byron Nelson. Nelson would later become a tour rival. The two would tie for the lead at the annual Christmas caddy tournament in December 1927, when both were fifteen. Nelson sunk a thirty foot putt to tie on the ninth and final hole. Instead of sudden death, they played another nine holes; Nelson sunk another substantial putt on the final green to win by a stroke.

Nelson was granted the only junior membership offered by the members of Glen Garden the following spring. Club rules did not allow caddies age 16 and older, so after August 1928, Hogan took his game to three daily-fee courses: Katy Lake, Worth Hills, and Z-Boaz.

Hogan dropped out of High School during his senior year. He became a professional golfer at the Texas Open in San Antonio in late January 1930, just shy of his eighteenth birthday.

Hogan met his future wife,Valerie Fox, in Sunday school in Fort Worth in the mid-1920s. They met again in 1932 when he landed a low-paying club pro job in Cleburne where her family had moved. They married in April 1935 at her parent’s home.

His early years as a pro were very difficult and he went broke more than once. Hogan’s wife Valerie believed in him. This helped see him through the tough years. He did not win his first pro tournament until March 1940 when he won three consecutive tournaments in North Carolina. Although it took a decade to secure his first victory.

By most accounts, Ben Hogan was the best golfer of his era. Still stands as one of the greatest of all time. “The Hawk” possessed fierce determination, an iron will, and unquestionable golf skills. This formed an aura which could intimidate opponents into competitive submission. In Scotland, Hogan was known as “The Wee Ice Man”, or, in some versions, “Wee Ice Mon,” a moniker earned during his famous British Open victory at Carnoustie in 1953. It is a reference to his steely and seemingly nerveless demeanor, itself a product of a golf swing he had built that was designed to perform better the more pressure he put it under.

Hogan was highly respected by fellow competitors for his superb management skills. During his peak years, he rarely if ever attempted a shot in competition which he had not thoroughly honed in practice.

Between the years of 1938 through 1959, Hogan won 63 professional golf tournaments despite his career’s being interrupted in its prime by World War II and a near-fatal car accident. Hogan and his wife, Valerie, survived a head-on collision with a Greyhound bus on a fog-shrouded bridge east of Van Horn, Texas on February 2, 1949. Hogan threw himself across Valerie in order to protect her, and would have been killed had he not done so, as the steering column punctured the driver’s seat. His doctors said he might never walk again, let alone play golf competitively. He left the hospital on April 1, 59 days after the accident.

The “Hogan Slam” was the 1953 season in which he won five of the six tournaments he entered and the first three major championships of the year. It still stands among the greatest single seasons in the history of professional golf. It was the only time a golfer won three major championships in a year until Tiger Woods matched the feat in 2000.

His nine career professional major championships tie him with Gary Player for fourth all-time, trailing only Jack Nicklaus (18), Tiger Woods (14) and Walter Hagen (11).
