Los Angeles Golf Courses: Sun, Surf and More

Los Angeles Golf Courses: Sun, Surf and More

Article by Wayne Hemrick

Of course you don’t want to play golf on the beach, which would be like playing in a gargantuan sand trap – but you can certainly enjoy a view of the ocean while playing at several Los Angeles golf courses, many of which are absolute garden spots. When it comes to the choice of a golf course los angeles aficionados can choose from any one of dozens of well-maintained, challenging public facilities – which are economical to use (in some cases they are free to the public), and include practice areas where you can concentrate on perfecting specific skills such as putting or swing – or one of the city’s exclusive private country clubs. In fact, many a private la golf course is legendary; a few private Los Angeles golf courses date back to the early years of the 20th Century. Who’s to say you won’t run into the ghosts of some silver screen legends such as Charlie Chaplin or Clark Gable?

We’re kidding, of course – there’s no such thing as ghosts (right?) You’ll definitely enjoy the mature and meticulous landscaping as well as gorgeous views when you play at a private LA golf course like Bobby Jones Golf just outside Malibu or one of the several exclusive LA golf courses in and around spectacular Topanga State Park.

Private vs. the Public Golf Course

Los Angeles residents enjoy having a choice between private country clubs and public municipal facilities; each of these offer certain advantages to particular people, and some may be better served by one more than the other. Private LA golf courses are of course expensive as well as exclusive facilities; however, these offer much more in the way of amenities such as food service (and you’ll find that the food at a private LA golf course restaurant to be excellent) as well as other activities; sometimes, a relaxing swim after a game is just the thing, followed by a cocktail at the onsite lounge.

You won’t find such amenities at public Los Angeles golf courses, though the play can be just as challenging. One major difference is the cost; as you might expect, you’ll pay much less to play at a public golf course. Los Angeles visitors will probably prefer public facilities for just this reason. Fortunately, there are lodging facilities that are quite convenient to these la golf courses when you come to visit on business or for pleasure.

Los Angeles Tee Times

Visitors to the City of Angels will want to take advantage of the less-crowded Los Angeles tee times, which are generally during weekday mornings. These are the least expensive times to enjoy Los Angeles golf courses, and will give you the pleasure of a more leisurely-paced game as well.

IMPROVE YOUR GOLF SWING WITH “SWING IMAGERY”

IMPROVE YOUR GOLF SWING WITH “SWING IMAGERY”

Article by JOHN PAOLINO

It only takes less than two seconds to make a golf swing, so how in the world can a golfer concentrate on all the elements of a good golf swing at once? In reality he can not, the mind can only focus on one thought at a time. Concentrating on each different component of your swing is great when your on the practice tee but on the course it’s time to put all the parts together into one complete and cohesive swing. The great Bobby Jones had said that he would play well when he thought of only one thing but would play excellent when he thought of nothing at all. Here are a few swing imagery thoughts that can you can implement to improve your swing. Keep in mind when your on the course only use one at a time.

I found the best image technique to keep my golf swing on the proper plane is to visualize myself shaking hands. By following this simple tip your shoulders, hips and knees will fall naturally in place from your take-away to your follow-through. Basically on your back swing you’ll imagine shaking hands with your left hand and on your follow through with your right hand. You set up to the ball with your upper body slightly bent over and knees bent and then pretend you are going to shake hands with someone to your right. At address the back of your left hand will be facing the fairway but as you shake hands to your right the left arm will extend until you are shaking someone’s hand at waist high. At that point in the swing the front of your left hand will be facing forward. Your left arm will be extended and your left knee comes inward and your hips will move out if the way. Now do the same thing in the opposite direction by shaking hands with your right hand with somebody to your left. A key point to keep in mind is at hip level the toe of clubhead should be pointing up. A good practice exercise is to take half swings in slow motion.

Another swing imagery technique is imagine you are looking down at yourself from above. Visualize yourself swinging around the back of your neck. At the top of your swing the club will be aiming directly down the fairway and your hands will be about half way between your head and your right shoulder. Your shoulders and the shaft of the club will be making a L-shape or 90 degree angle. This imagery will help keep you from swaying and maintaining balance. You will also be at the proper position to begin your downswing.

Finally, think of your clubhead making an imaginary circle. Visualize yourself making a circle with the clubhead around your body at about a 45 degree angle. This technique will help you have the proper swing plane and enable you to hit the ball straighter and further.

Experiment the next time your on the course with one of these swing imagery techniques. They will also help with your timing and tempo and allow you to better enjoy the game. Remember, a good golfer needs to take all the parts and blend them into one smooth cohesive swing.

Advantages of the Mike Austin Golf Swing

Advantages of the Mike Austin Golf Swing

Article by Humberto Hale

As Trackman launch monitors and 3D swing analysis technology become more popular, I believe it will usher in a new age in the world of professional golf, and golf instruction as a whole. Today’s current ‘fad’ teaching styles will give way to a new style of swing – a style who’s origins date back over 100 years! This ‘classic’ style of swinging, featuring much more active hips and legs, and a free release of the clubhead, can be seen as far back as 1900 and before. James Braid, John Henry Taylor, and Harry Vardon, dubbed ‘The Great Triumvirate’, won 16 British Open titles in 21 years. The trio was astonishingly dominant – one coming in runner up the 5 times they didn’t win. This early swing of the three featured a free lifting left heel on the backswing, with a swinging spine in each direction. The left arm was allowed to bend slightly at the elbow, for the sake of suppleness. The clubhead was thrown with a lashing sidearm baseball type motion. Braid reportedly woke up one day with this concept, and soon was driving balls ridiculous distances for the times – perhaps as far as 375 yards! The classic swing style continued in the hands of Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones in the 20′s, the latter whom continued to refine the style with much careful thought and practice. It was about this time that a teenage Mike Austin probably watched and was influenced by Jones at Eastlake Country Club.Although there is evidence to suggest that Austin was naturally gifted at golf from an early age, it was the Eastlake period where he really started to shine. A big strong lad, Austin started to hit more prodigious drives seemingly all the time. First, the drives over a 300 yard lake, then 350, and later on in the 30′s over 400 yards in tournament play!An obviously gifted athlete, Mike Austin was equally as studious. Presently, his college background has come into question, but nevertheless, the knowledge and understanding of his subjects was gained somehow. Psychology, physiology, then physics and engineering – their secrets were all mastered by Austin and applied to the golf swing. By 1946 when Austin earned a PhD in Kinesiology, he had taken the classic swing model and refined it to scientific perfection.Mike’s raw swing slowly became more measured and precise, and with it, the distance and accuracy continued to improve. Mike’s study of the human body and the physics that guide the swing and the impact with the ball yielded what many people called ‘the perfect golf swing’. Mike himself claimed that his technique was, ‘The most efficient way to hit a ball.’The advantages of this style of swing are numerous. All 12 levers of the body are moved in a manner to produce large amounts of power, while also swinging the clubhead around a perfect elliptical wheel into the ball, transferring the most energy possible from the collision. The spine is also used for leverage, to transfer weight from foot to foot. The clubface is precisely controlled by the wrists and forearms, in the same manner as many other sports motions such as tennis, racquetball, and baseball. Its ability to reduce risk of injury is another great advantage of the Austin swing. Because the joints only move according to their design, within normal range of motion, they undergo significantly less stress than the modern golf swing. The lumbar spine, especially, can be at great risk from the style of golf stroke that one chooses. Many of today’s styles place exponential torquing forces on the lower back, and the chronic injuries to many young stars is well documented. So I say, bring on the technology! Trackman is already supporting the advantages of Mike Austin’s “Under, Up, and Out’ philosophy – showing that the ball will carry and roll farther when hit upwards from the inside on a driver. As the scientific community has finally started throwing their new toys at the golf swing to unravel its mysteries, I have no doubt that the classic swing, and particularly the Austin swing, will hold up to scrutiny, and usher in a new age of teaching and swinging which will look suspiciously like 1950!Golf Swing Basics
